THE legendary story of Thaipoosam Kavady is remembered every year and will be commemorated this month from January 12 to January 26.
The story of Thaipoosam Kavady revolves around the popular Tamil deity Lord Muruga and his battle to prove good over evil.
Each year, devotees observe a fast, gather at temples for daily prayer and prepare their “kavadies” (a wooden structure carried on the shoulders of devotees) and chariots for the main day of Kavady when they parade in strict devotion. The Umbango Sri Siva Soobramoniar Alyam will be hosting its annual Kavady festival on January 12 at 2.30 pm.
“We humbly invite you and your family to our annual Thaipoosam Kavady. Flag hoisting will begin on January 12 at 2.30 pm and daily obayams will start from 5 pm on weekdays and 3 pm on weekends. Our temple chariot will also be going around Port Shepstone on January 13. Please contact one of our temple members for Kavady bookings and the public Kavady parade will be held on January 26.
“From all of us at Umbango Sri Siva Soobramoniar Alyam, best wishes at this auspicious time. We look forward to bringing the community together,” said Cohen Pillay of Umbango Sri Siva Soobramoniar Alyam.
