COMMUNITY members from Ward 22 in Murchison turned on their own water recently with the help of Vukuzenzele Youth Development and Sisonke Environmental Youth Organisation.
The people of Nkanyezini were tired of having no water whenever there was an interruption, so they decided to build a system to get water from the ground.
The original system was linked to a tank that would collect and store the water, however, the system was changed to fit a tap instead.
“This water conservation project initially used a tank, but it was no longer working so we changed the system,” said Thuli Cebisa of Vukuzenzele.
“The community has a challenge with municipal water so we needed a back-up source and this water has been there for years,” she said.
Vukuzenzele donated the equipment and Nkosi Nxumalo, a plumber, from Sisonke, did the plumbing.
Cebisa said the project was successfully operational and a follow-up meeting will be held next Friday to discuss the next project in the area.
“About 200 homes obtain water from here when municipal water is unavailable,” said Cebisa.
