HIBISCUS Coast Municipality has given a progress report on how far preparations for the amalgamation of the municipalities have gone.
Hibiscus Coast and Ezinqoleni are set to combine and form Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.
Nkonyeni was an ANC freedom fighter from Gamalakhe and is the husband of KZN MEC for Education, Peggy Nkonyeni.
Municipal manager Max Mbili said the municipality is not 100% ready for amalgamation, but they are trying their best to finalise everything that needs to be done.
“On Tuesday council considered six by-laws for the new municipality, and a placement policy for employees was concluded,” said Mbili.
He said with regards to the naming of the municipality they are still waiting the committee responsible to respond to the name Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, which was agreed to by council and the community last year.
“As you will remember last year the community participated in the naming of the new municipality and the name was approved by both councils.
“The name has been sent for approval and then from there suggestions on the new logo and colours will be discussed.
Mbili said with regards to the budget for the next financial year both Ezinqoleni and HCM will draft separate budgets and IDPs.
HCM has assured communities that they are working swiftly towards getting all the necessary processes finalised before elections and the amalgamation.
