More rain is needed - weather service

PRAYERS for rain in the province have been heard as weather forecasters predicted on Sunday that there was about 60% rainfall for KZN before the end of the weekend.

However, a lot more is desperately needed according to Stacy Colborne from the South African Weather Service.

“The rain will provide some relief to our drought-hit province, but a lot more rain, over a longer period, is desperately needed.

“This rainfall should relieve some of the drought,” Colborne said.

The Ugu District Municipality still urges residents to use water sparingly as water restrictions may well be on the cards should there not be more rain.

Last week the municipality reported that four of its dams - Bhobhoyi, Harding, KwaFodo, KwaMbotho and Gilbert Eisle - were at a 0% level.

The Umthavuna Dam was at 84%, Umzinto at 18% and EJ Smith at 63%.

Ugu mayor, Nthombifikile Gumede, has asked that all residents pray for rain, while at izimbizos in various areas.
