UGU District Municipality, in partnership with the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), will unveil the Ugu Disaster Management Centre, on the R102 Marburg Extension 2, at its official opening on Saturday, 28 November. The MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube and the Ugu District mayor, Ntombifikile Gumede will preside at the opening of the centre.
The construction of this multimillion- rand structure began at a sod turning ceremony on 8 November, 2013 following a decision by Cogta, as the custodian of disaster management in KwaZulu-Natal, to fulfil its legislative and policy mandate through allocation of a budget to enhance district disaster management centres in KZN.
The municipality sought Cogta’s assistance to build a fully fledged disaster centre after it had fallen victim to the 2008 floods that left some parts of the district in ruin.
The centre was co-funded for R15.9 million, which includes the construction of phase one, the disaster management block of offices and the external works and earthworks which are part of phase two.
The second phase of the centre will be completed with the construction of council chambers and phase three will be the fire and rescue unit.
The centre’s expansion creates greater opportunities to fulfil the municipality’s vision of having a centre to service local municipalities and have a bigger impact in the management of disasters in the district.
The construction of the disaster centre has also created temporary employment, which partially responded to the district municipality’s fight against the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality where 29 job opportunities were created.
The public are cordially invited to be part of the opening ceremony of this multi-million-rand disaster management centre on Saturday, which starts at 9am.
