No policing of by-laws at St Michaels

IT is with great concern that I address this letter to you and your readers.

I am a resident in St Michaels on Sea, on the beachfront and want to compliment the town council and all concerned with the beachfront project. It looks stunning, just in time for the holidaymakers who make their way here after a hard year at work and school.

We have watched this project progress from initiation until completion and the company doing the job have done it excellently – no short cuts and no sparing costs and the reward is there for all to see. Thank you.

The problem is this – the uncontrolled partying and trashing the area, until 4am, with no regard to residents, who happen to be the ratepayers who contributed to the upgrade of the beachfront and made it possible.

After an all-night party last night the new tarmac is littered with broken bottles. It is heart breaking to see and one can’t help wonder how long it will be before it becomes another Port Shepstone.

The thumping music coming from the area, drinking, shrieking and general raucous behaviour continues unabated until the early morning hours. This should be classified as public disturbance. The notice board relating to these by-laws has been removed and not replaced.

It’s the beginning of December – heaven help us over the festive period. There are no toilet facilities after 5pm either so we have to put up with people doing their ablutions in the open – why should we.

Why is there no policing of the by-laws on the South Coast? I know there is in the Cape and more recently Durban as well - doesn’t anybody care?

Jill
