A 27-YEAR-OLD man appeared in Scottburgh Regional Court recently for rape and robbery.
Senzo Ngcongo was convicted last week and sentenced to 15 years’ for rape and 10 years for robbery.
The robbery sentence is to run concurrently with that of the rape.
On 21 April, 2013, at 3pm, a 17-year-old girl was walking along the road through a sugar-cane plantation in Mgangeni near Kenterton when Ngcongo, who was following her, began chatting to her.
He then pushed her into the plantation and raped her before robbing her of her cellphone and money.
The victim made her way to the road where a passing motorist, who happened to be a police constable, assisted her.
Ngcongo was subsequently arrested and charged. The case was investigated by Detective Constable Mfanelo Mchunu of the Sawoti SAPS Detective Service.
