Regional ANC ‘stripped of executive powers’

THE ANC Lower South Coast Region was stripped of all executive powers by the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) on Sunday.

At a meeting with the regional executive council (REC) at the Uvongo Town Hall on Sunday the PEC took the decision to strip the REC of all executive powers citing tensions arising from “issues of deployment”.

ANC provincial spokesperson Mdumiseni Ntuli denied claims that the regional ANC had been disbanded, however, said the regional branch executive powers were taken away in the “interest of unity in the organisation”.

The PEC formed a task team to oversee municipal issues and run the 2017 regional conference.

Members of the task team include Bheki Mtolo (convenor) Thami Ngubane, Sduduzo Gumede and Weziwe Thusi.

The ANC Lower South Coast, reportedly backing Cyril Ramaphosa in the ANC’s elective conference in December, said the decision by the PEC regional secretary was abrupt and unfair.

“While we accept that the PEC has a right to withdraw certain powers and functions of the REC on the Lower South Coast, we must state clearly, as we have done already with our provincial leaders, that as leadership of the region we were not given a list of the complaints and/or allegations. Neither were we given a fair and reasonable opportunity to test the veracity of the allegations made against the leadership of the ANC Lower South Coast,” said regional spokesperson Mzwandile Mkhwanazi in a press release on Monday.

Mkhwanazi asked party members to co-operate with the task team.

“It is a normal part of a successful and vibrant democratic organisation such as the ANC to have differing views on issues. The ANC Lower South Coast is therefore no different,” said Mkhwanazi.
