South Coast Carnival kicks off

THE inaugural South Coast Carnival was held in St Michaels on Saturday, December 15, and although the numbers were below expected, and the rain threatened to thwart festivities, organisers say the event was a success.

Carnival-goers sparingly laced the streets of St Michaels for the parade during the day, and the main beach concert was off to a late start, however it was not long before the crowd was dancing and cheering on to the sounds of their favourite DJs, including DJ Mdix, DJ Tira, DJ Lesoul, and L’vovo Derango.

Organiser Ntombi Mkhoma said ticket sales were about 1 500, a margin below the expected 2 000, however she says it was still good for a first time, saying: “The event was a success because it was the first time ever that such an event has been organised on the South Coast. Also, we had very little time to organise it.”

Next year should be bigger and better.

“After this first one, I am very excited about the next one because we will have more time to organise it, and we can plan better for a date which is out of season,” said Mkhoma.
