TWO young South Coast swimmers took part in the South African short course (25m) swimming championships in Pietermaritzburg last week.
Some Olympic swimmers competed as it was the trials for the World Short Course Championships.
Samantha Labuschagne and Michelle Kretzschmar competed and both swam personal best times in their events.
Samantha made finals in the 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle in which she placed seventh in the country. She also placed third in the 100m freestyle, which puts her in third position in the country over all age groups.
As a result of this, Samantha is going to complete internationally, starting with the Middle East leg of the World Cup Series in Dubai and Doha in October.
The other young swimmer Michelle improved on her two events by 11.83 seconds and is looking forward to making senior national qualifying times. Their swimming coach Mandy Koegelenberg said starting from the next month there is going to be hard training and fine tuning of Samantha’s swimming and racing to get her ready to compete in the international stage.
“With this kind of step into the international stage it requires funds and we are looking for sponsorships for this meet. If anyone is interested in sponsoring Samantha, contact me on 083 562 3711,” said Koegelenberg.
