A TOTAL of 28 runners from the Ugu Athletics Club participated in the Durban City Marathon on Sunday.
Chairperson of the club Pardon Mathebula said the marathon was challenging but a success nonetheless.
Mathebula explained that due to the structure of the run course runners experienced some muscle injuries.
“The course for the city marathon is flat and runs in and around the town as well as among the high rise buildings. A flat course is abusive to runners in that a runner is expected to keep on running as opposed to walking on hills.
The effect of this is muscle injuries which is very painful,” said Mathebula.
He said the weather was conducive for running although Durban is notorious for being very humid and warm, contributing to runners fatigue. “Most runners complained that the heat caused them to tire easily, however all the runners ran a good race and finished comfortably in the 42.2 km, 21.1 km and 10 km marathons,” said Mathebula.
The best runner from the Ugu Athletics Club for this race was Menzi Tshayiza who according to results finished the race at his personal best of 2 hours, 48 minutes, 40 seconds.
