THE Umzumbe Municipality is gearing up to host the ninth Umzumbe Beach Games and everyone is invited to the event on Turton beach on 6 February.
The games are held in conjunction with the Department of Arts and Culture.
“This event is not only limited to the youth, it is also for the community. The games are an important event on our calendar as they contribute towards the development of sport at Umzumbe Municipality,” said Umzumbe Municipality spokesperson, Trevor Khanyile.
“The games will feature sport codes from all Umzumbe Municipality wards as participants sweat it out on the Turton shore,” he said.
Sport codes include soccer (male and female), volleyball, netball (female), touch rugby, athletics (five-kilometre and 100-metre run), stick fighting, umlabalaba, chess and tug of war.
The games are for children under 19 only.
“Teams will be formed as per the five clusters. There is no prior selection because teams will chosen in the morning,” said Khanyile.
Local artists and a surprise national artist and deejay will entertain throughout the day.
Umzumbe Municipality Mayor Cllr S.T. Gumede said the games will take place on Turton beach, which is still under development.
“We have appointed a service provider to develop that beach to the level of Margate beach and Durban beachfront, or even better,” said Gumede.
The municipality is in the process of building an off-ramp in that area to ensure easy access to the beach.
