KIRKWOOD Care Centre will be hosting a mental health awareness program at Kirkwood High School which will focus on suicide prevention among teenagers on October 3.
With October being Mental Health Awareness month the centre hopes to raise awareness surrounding mental health issues and suicide among pupils at Kirkwood High School.
Rehab therapist from the Kirkwood Care Centre, Phumza Makeleni believes it is important to focus on mental health issues among teenagers because they are most likely to commit suicide due to the amount of pressure they often have to face.
“Ages between 15 to 29 years are mostly affected by suicide,” she said.
Social worker Stephen Davids, who specializes in families affected by substance abuse and suicide, will speak about suicide prevention at the school.
The Department of Social Development will provide the necessary information on resources available in the community for teenagers suffering from mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
- Registration will start at 08:00 and the programme will commence at 08:30.
