Young players invited to indoor hockey

SEPTEMBER means the start of the indoor hockey season and this year young players are invited to join the fairly new franchise, Uitenhage Lynxs Pro Series Indoor, to experience this exhilarating and fast sport.

Selwyn Seale, former professional indoor hockey player, coach and umpire, started this franchise in October 2018.

“Indoor hockey is all about the vibe, energy and funky style which appeal to the youth. The interest in the sport and talent in Uitenhage are phenomenal,” said Seale.

He last year started with indoor hockey coaching for U/14 to U/18 teams and at the end of the season a total of 50 young players have joined the sport.

“This year we wish to start with the coaching of younger players, for the U/8 to U/13 categories as well. This is the ideal age to start with indoor hockey coaching.

“The problem is that local schools do not have hockey at junior level. In Port Elizabeth, several schools commence with hockey training at an early age. This gives a player a huge advantage compared to those who start to play the game only when in high school,” said Seale.

Local schools’ league

Schools in Despatch and Uitenhage are encouraged to enter teams for the local schools’ league.

“We are excited as Brandwag as well as Despatch have this year entered teams for indoor hockey to participate in the local league,” said Seale.

Indoor hockey is quick and one needs to be fit. One of the differences from normal hockey is that players may use the fencing boards as well in driving the ball towards scoring a goal.

PSI is a winning professional sporting organisation at national and international levels and has tremendous value in teaching young players the fundamentals of this modern game.

Indoor hockey coaching at the Uitenhage Indoor Sport Centre will be as follows: Mondays U/8, U/10 & U/12 players 16:00-18:00; Wednesdays U/13, U/14 & U/15 players 16:00-18:00; Fridays U/16 & U/18 players 16:00-20:00.

Open day

All between the ages of U/8 to U/18 interested in indoor hockey are invited to attend the open day on Monday 2, September. It will be held at the Uitenhage Indoor Sport Centre from 16:00 to 18:00.

Another sporting venture for Seale is to start with Hockey 5, which currently is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. This is to hockey what sevens is to rugby.
