KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng bore the brunt, with 25 people in each province dying. 

The number of healthcare workers vaccinated under the Sisonke Protocol was 6 471 as of 18:30 on Wednesday, bringing the total to 278 909. 

The government said it was in the final stages of sealing a deal for more vaccines. 

The DA, however, wants the SA Human Rights Commission to investigate why the rollout is relatively slow, with promises of the imminent arrival of more vaccines.
