Johannesburg - Fourteen crew members were rescued in the early hours of Tuesday morning after their fishing trawler began sinking following a collision with a bulk carrier, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.
Rescuers were alerted of the distress call around 01:33, spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.
"A red distress flare was reportedly sighted in the vicinity."
Lambinon said at the time, the crew members had managed to disembark the sinking boat and made their way onto the trawler's two life rafts.
The crew's life rafts were spotted by another bulk carrier in the vicinity which rescued the entire group around 02:35, Lambinon said.
It was later confirmed that the crew's trawler had indeed collided with a bulk carrier due to the dense fog at the time, however the carrier did not sustain much damage.
The men would remain on board the boat until it reached the Port of Table Bay where they would be medically assessed. No injuries or casualties have been reported.
