  • Two men have been handed life sentences for raping a Limpopo woman.
  • The men offered her a lift before taking her to a secluded area and raping her.
  • They were arrested when police spotted them speeding off.

Two rapists have been sentenced to life imprisonment in the Thabazimbi Regional Court in Limpopo.

Tumelo Mataboge, 30, and Luckyboy Rapula Motlhomi, 35, were found to have raped a 36-year-old woman in Northam on 23 April 2019.

They stopped to offer the woman a lift and then drove to a secluded road. The two men then threatened the woman and both raped her, the court heard.

They were arrested when police officers spotted them speeding away.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said:

The police who were patrolling the area as a reaction to numerous complaints of similar incidents emanating from the same area came across a vehicle with two occupants speeding off…and pulled it over. A further probe led to the discovery of the victim.

She told police the two men had raped her, and they were immediately arrested, Mojapelo said.

"The case was assigned to Constable Thabiso Anbrey Seshoka of Northam Detective Unit for further investigations. The two men…were ultimately found guilty of raping the victim and were each sentenced to life imprisonment," Mojapelo said.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the investigating officer, saying the life sentences would deter other rapists.
