The suspects are between the ages of 19 and 25. The matter was postponed to 19 April for formal bail proceedings.

The National Prosecuting Authority previously said the suspects had assaulted the policeman with bricks and beer bottles. This, after he got into a fight with one of the group.

Ngobeni attempted to run away, but they tripped him. He was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Ngobeni, who was off duty at the time, was attacked outside his home.

His death came in the wake of a spate of officers being killed in the line of duty. Constable Khangelani Mangqabini was fatally wounded in a shooting outside his Delft home following a dispute with a motorist in March.

A 23-year-old man handed himself over at the Delft police station. In the latest incident, a police officer in Vrygrond was shot and killed.
