Durban - A 20-year-old woman drowned in Amanzimtoti when she was swept out to sea on Friday, paramedics said.

A member of the public saw the woman being swept out at Illovo Beach and called the lifeguards, Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

"Reports from the scene indicate that the 20-year-old woman was swimming in the sea at the river mouth when she was swept away by a strong current."
