ANC Johannesburg branch renews call for Zuma to resign

Cape Town – An ANC branch in Johannesburg has resolved that president Jacob Zuma and the national executive committee (NEC) should resign.

The party's Sefako Makgatho branch had written to ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe as far back as April calling for Zuma, both as president of the country and ANC, to be removed from office or face internal committees.

Branch chairperson Sasabona Manganye said on Wednesday they did not get a satisfactory response.

"The NEC took a resolution where they accepted Zuma's [Nkandla] apology. They did not follow the correct process," he told News24.

"So it was more of a cover up than resolving the matter. It haunted us until today."

The latest resolution included that the NEC resign too.

The branch, which covers Doornfontein and parts of Berea, Hillbrow and Joubert Park, analysed the recent local election in a special general meeting on Monday.

Elephant in the room

The branch managed to retain the ward but said it suffered "a magnificent decline" in light of low voter turnout.

Voters and potential voters told door-to-door volunteers about a number of concerns.

The branch said these included e-tolls, Zuma's "lack of integrity and morals", his corruption charges, the Nkandla matter, the Guptas' perceived influence and business deals and the NEC's alleged failure to hold him accountable or consistently apply rules.

"The one we believed is the elephant in the room is the ... president, who is the face of the organisation," said Manganye.

He felt the correct process would have been for Zuma to be subjected to the party's integrity or national disciplinary committees.

"This is the right place to test our allegations."

The branch resolved that a council or task team of stalwarts be formed to take the ANC to a national consultative conference.

It was lobbying other branches to support its resolutions.
