National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise says the African Transformation Movement's (ATM) court bid to have its motion of no confidence in President Cyril Ramaphosa decided by a "secret ballot" is a baseless "abuse of process", which should be punished with a heavy legal costs order.

She maintains that the ATM, which holds two out of 400 seats in the National Assembly, is attempting to influence the African National Congress' "internal affairs" by pushing for a secret ballot.

"The ATM does not bring a genuine case worthy of this court's intervention in these proceedings," Modise stated in papers filed at the Western Cape High Court, which will hear the party's case on Wednesday and Thursday this week.
