A Bloemfontein church pastor has been arrested for allegedly keeping his son's babysitter captive and repeatedly raping her.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Christopher Singo said the pastor hired the woman to help around the house on Friday.

She was also tasked with babysitting his four-year-old son when he went to church that night.

However, instead of going to church in Thaba Nchu as expected, he allegedly raped the woman repeatedly, Singo said in a statement.

He did the same on Saturday and ignored her pleas to be released so that she could go home. Singo said she managed to get hold of the pastor's phone and called the police for help.

She also managed to run out of the house, taking the four-year-old child with her.

The Hawks and the Flying Squad arrested the 54-year-old pastor at his home in Lakeview, Bloemspruit, on Sunday.

During his arrest, the police also recovered a vehicle that was reported stolen, Singo said.

The pastor will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

He faces rape, human trafficking, and possession of a stolen vehicle charges.
