"With [the] cooperation of members of the community, police questioned Matevane Mokatsanyane, who is the owner of the house where the victim stayed, and Tebogo Mokgomo, who is the victim's boyfriend.

"It was consequently established that the pair allegedly stole the victim's two cellphones and locked her inside the house. They came back later the same day and allegedly hanged her," spokesperson Captain Aafje Botma said in a statement.

The accused were arrested and charged with murder.

The pair would remain in custody and were due back in court on 30 August for a formal bail application.

This was yet another incident involving the murder of a woman during Women's Month.

Maruping's family previously told News24 they had been desperate to get to the bottom of what really happened.

North West provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena, condemned the incident and said no stone would be left unturned in ensuring the accused are convicted.
