A body, burnt beyond recognition, has been discovered in an open field in Cape Town, Western Cape police have confirmed.

According to the local community police forum chairperson, Pastor Charles George, it is believed to be the remains of a child.

The body was discovered near Blikkiesdorp, in Delft, on Thursday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said officers on patrol responded to the complaint at about 16:30.

"Parts of the burned body was still tied with wires," he said.

"The motive for the attack is unknown. The suspects are unknown and yet to be arrested."

George said police were still on the scene.
