A Cape Town attorney has been found guilty of embezzling more than R6 million from the Road Accident Fund (RAF).
Eslin Frank Meyer, 64, was struck off the roll of attorneys after he was convicted of theft in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Bellville on Tuesday, 26 January.
Meyer was practising under Eslin Meyer Attorneys in Mitchells Plain and Strand. He was arrested in 2014 after he represented several clients in RAF claims between 2005 and 2010.
"The Hawks' Serious Commercial Crimes Investigation [team] revealed that he retained the full proceeds of payments. Whilst in some instances he presented false payment advices to his clients and paid over only a certain portion of the funds," Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani said.
Meyer was expected to be sentenced on 26 February.
