Cape Town cop shoots alleged attackers, killing one

Cape Town – An investigation is underway after an off-duty police officer fired his pistol in apparent self defence, killing a man and injuring another, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said on Tuesday.

The constable was sitting in his vehicle in Kokerboom Street, Delft, last Thursday evening when two men approached him, said national Ipid spokesperson Robbie Raburabu.

They claimed to have been robbed.

As the officer was about to assist them, they apparently attacked him. He then drew his service pistol and shot them.

One man died on the scene, and the other was taken to hospital.

Ipid was investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.

Raburabu said no arrests had been made.
