The City of Cape Town's Mayoral Committee (Mayco) has approved the transfer of land to the national government for the construction of an additional police station in Belhar.
Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said the matter was awaiting final approval from the full council.
The application was first discussed at a special meeting of the subcouncil in November last year, he said.

"A purchase price of R4 950 000, excluding VAT, and being 25% of the full market value of R19 800 000, is payable. This discounted (25%) sale of land to the national government to enable them to build a new Belhar police station demonstrates the willingness of the City to support a cooperative approach to policing," he added.
Western Cape Community Safety and Police Oversight MEC Reagen Allen welcomed the approval of the transfer.
Allen said:
He said the additional police station would urgently address crime in Belhar.
"This should bring the additional boots on the ground and ensure greater visibility in the area. I trust the process will swiftly be finalised so that the construction of this much-needed station can commence," he said.
