Johannesburg - The City of Ekurhuleni on Thursday fired a long-standing employee for making a racist remark in an email.

The woman sent the email to a colleague on July 31, and it was subsequently sent to management, Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina’s spokesperson, Gugu Ndima, said.

The mail read: "Ek is moeg met hierdie bobbejane hier hulle dink ek sal bedank soos meneer van der Nest en ek sal nie. [I'm tired of these baboons here. They think I will resign like Mr van der Nest and I will not.]"

"No employee of the city shall escape the repercussions of behaving in a manner that does not accord with the values espoused by the city or undermining constitutional foundations of democracy," Masina said in a statement.

Ndima said the aggrieved party would receive counseling. She would not disclose any details about the woman who sent the email, only that she had been working there for a long time. They were not aware of who Van der Nest was, she said.

Masina said the City would not tolerate racism.

"We have a dark past of racial injustices and no one will undermine efforts to build a non-racist, non-sexist and democratic society."
