A burglary suspect has died and another has been injured after a police officer shot them when they allegedly broke into his house in Bloemfontein in the Free State.

He said that when police arrived on the scene, two men were lying on the ground in the yard.

"One suspect was found with a bullet wound to the chest and he was declared dead at the scene.

"The other suspect was shot [in] the legs and he was taken to Pelonomi hospital for treatment, and arrested after he was discharged from hospital," Makhele added.

A police investigation revealed that the two men allegedly broke into a police officer's house.

Police found the police officer's plasma TV on the ground.

Makhele said that the vehicle the men used was confiscated after it was found without a registration number or licence disc.

"Further investigation revealed it that it belonged to a girlfriend of one of the suspects", he added.

The matter has been handed over to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the hospitalised man faces a house robbery charge.
