Coronavirus infections increase by 966, 103 new Covid-19-related deaths recorded

  • The total confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections to date are 1 522 697.
  • The Covid-19-related death toll is 50 906 after 103 news ones were reported on 9 March. 
  • There are 27 509 active infections in the country as of 9 March. 

The country's confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections have increased by 966, while it also recorded an additional 103 Covid-19-related fatalities, taking the death toll to 50 906.

According to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, the total confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections to date was 1 522 697.

As of 9 March, there were 27 509 active infections, while the country recorded 1 444 282 recoveries, which translates to a recovery rate of 94.8%.

Gauteng remains the most affected province with 26.7% of the total confirmed cases, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 21.7% and the Western Cape with 18.3%.

Of the 103 new Covid-19-related deaths reported, 28 were recorded in Gauteng, 28 in the Free State, 24 in KwaZulu-Natal, 15 in the Western Cape, six in Mpumalanga, while two new deaths were reported in the Eastern Cape.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased patients," Mkhize said.
