Covid-19: SA records 15 046 new infections and 416 new deaths

• As of Monday 11 January, South Africa recorded a total of 1 246 643 confirmed Covid-19 cases.
• 15 046 new cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours.
• 416 new Covid-19-related fatalities have been recorded, taking the death toll to 33 579.

South Africa recorded another 15 046 confirmed Covid-19 infections by Monday, along with 416 new Covid-19-related deaths – taking the death toll to 33 579.

According to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, as of Monday, the country recorded a total of 1 246 643 confirmed Covid-19 cases.

Gauteng remains the most affected province with 27.1% of the total confirmed cases, which translates to 338 071 cases. KwaZulu-Natal has recorded 255 819 confirmed cases to date, the Western Cape 243 182 cases, and the Eastern Cape 181 532 cases.

To date, 7 236 389 tests have been completed, with 52 496 tests conducted in the past 24 hours, Mkhize said.

As per active confirmed cases of Covid-19, KwaZulu-Natal recorded the most with 93 376, followed by Gauteng with 50 501, and the Western Cape with 48 416.

Mkhize also reported a further 416 Covid-19-related deaths, of which 163 were recorded in the Eastern Cape, 30 in the Free State, 38 in KwaZulu-Natal, four in Mpumalanga, four in North West, one in the Northern Cape and 176 in the Western Cape.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Mkhize said.

The country recorded a total of 973 265 recoveries (78.1%) as of Monday.

Gauteng, as the most affected province in terms of total confirmed cases, recorded 281 400 recoveries, with the Western Cape edging towards the 200 000 mark at 186 403 recoveries.
