Covid-19: South Africa records 16 240 new infections as death toll increases by 516

South Africa recorded 16 240 new laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 infections on Wednesday and 516 deaths, bringing the official death toll to 68 192.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Wednesday, the country recorded 2 327 472 laboratory-confirmed cases.

"The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD)… reports that 16 240 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 27.5% positivity rate," the statement read.

Gauteng has recorded 827 393 cumulative cases, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 379 198 and the Western Cape with 370 997.

"The majority of new cases today (Wednesday) are from Gauteng (32%), followed by the Western Cape (21%). KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 11%; Limpopo and North West each accounted for 9%; Mpumalanga accounted for 7%; Eastern Cape accounted for 5%; Free State accounted for 3%; and the Northern Cape accounted for 2% of today's new cases," NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said.

Gauteng recorded 5 219 new cases on Wednesday, the Western Cape 3 471 and KwaZulu-Natal 1 803.

There was an increase of 831 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours. As of Wednesday, 17 286 people were in both public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa has conducted 14 369 234 cumulative tests, of which 59 068 were carried out in the last 24 hours.

The recovery rate is 90.2%, which translates to 2 098 818 recoveries.

According to the Department of Health, 5 831 389 vaccine doses have been administered. Of those, 257 492 were administered in the last 24 hours.

To date, 958 657 people have been fully vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine, while 1 069 722 have been vaccinated with the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
