Port Elizabeth - Armed robbers used an unknown explosive device to blow up a drop safe during a robbery at a garage in Perseverance, Port Elizabeth on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said eight men were seen getting out of a white Quantum minibus at the Caltex garage shortly after 15:00.

He said the men entered the shop on the premises and demanded money and the location of the drop safe.

"The two cashiers on duty were tied up and locked in the bathroom before the drop safe was blown open with an unknown explosive device," he said.

Beetge said the men took an undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene in a white Nissan bakkie.

"This vehicle was discovered abandoned shortly thereafter in Zwide," he said.

Beetge said no arrests had been made.
