Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers arrested a municipal employee for reckless and drunk driving on Monday when he allegedly failed to comply with the rules of the road.

Curious to see if he needed help with an emergency, they pulled the Nissan Cabstar off the road and questioned the driver about his reason for disregarding a stop sign, EMPD spokesperson Kelebogile Thepa said.

They suspected that he was drunk due to the strong alcohol odour he had given off and his bloodshot eyes, Thepa added.

A breathalyser test was conducted and the driver was found to be over the legal breath-alcohol limit, according to the spokesperson.

He was immediately arrested and taken to a hospital so that blood samples could be drawn before he was detained at the Springs police station.

"The City has zero tolerance for law breakers," Thepa said, before praising the EMPD officers for their work.

"We commend the outstanding work by the officers, as such resources are intended for service delivery and can never be instruments in the commission of crime," he said.
