Failure will mean more unemployment – Mashaba

Johannesburg – New Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba carefully considered his choices of mayoral committee members, he said on Friday.

“It’s critical to pick the right people for the team… to assume such a huge responsibility,” he said after his swearing-in ceremony at the Johannesburg Theatre Complex on Friday.

If they failed, it would mean he had failed as a leader.

“Our failure will lead to more unemployment in our city, more economic starvation in our city and country. I have always maintained that if Johannesburg works then South Africa works.”

Mashaba was voted in as mayor at a marathon council sitting on Monday. He beat the ANC’s Parks Tau by 144 votes to 125.

He praised city manager Trevor Fowler for being his guiding light. He said Fowler had helped not only with the first few days, but had set up training for both himself and his MMCs to prepare them for the task ahead.

“I am really pleased with the reception I have received. They embraced me and accepted our situation. They have been truly supportive from the moment I walked in the office.”

He could not provide clarity on whether or not he would continue working with Fowler.

“I really can't say much on the way forward. We are having engagements regarding the future.”

Mashaba's team has eight DA and two IFP members.

They are:

Housing: Mzobanzi Ntuli (IFP)
Transport: Nonhlanhla Helen Makhuba (IFP)
Economic development: Sharon Peetz
Environment and infrastructure services: Anthony Still
Development planning: Funzela Ngubeni
Community development: Nonhlanhla Sifumba
Health and social development: Mpho Phalatse
Public safety: Michael Son
Finance: Rabelani Dagada
Corporate and shared services: Valencia Khumalo
