Residents were cautioned to keep their windows closed although there was no danger to property as yet, the department’s Theo Layne said.
Two hundred firefighters with 25 vehicles and five helicopters were on scene fighting the blaze. Layne said two water-bombers will also go out later in the day.
Meanwhile, a fire that began on Devil’s Peak at the weekend has been put out.
About 15 firefighting vehicles responded to the fire at 21:30 on Saturday night, said fire and rescue services spokesperson Liezl Moodie.
Moodie said 70 firefighters including supporting staff worked tirelessly overnight to put out the fire.
