Gauteng motorist arrested for driving over 200km/h

Johannesburg – A Gauteng motorist was arrested on Friday night after he was caught doing the “highest speed recorded this festive season”.

The motorist was arrested on the N1 near Ventersburg in the Free State for driving at an excessive speed of 221km/h in a 120km/h zone, Road Traffic Management Corporation said on Saturday.

Spokesperson Simon Zwane said traffic officers chased the speeding motorist for almost one kilometre before he stopped.

He was taken to the Ventersburg Police Station.

Zwane said the prosecutor would decide on an appropriate charge.

In another incident in the Free State, another motorist was arrested for driving at 199km/h on the R34 in Odendaalsrust.

“Motorists are warned that speeding is a criminal offence and a major contributor in fatal road crashes,” Zwane said.
