Eleven suspected illegal miners were arrested at a mine in Northam in Limpopo on Thursday.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Matimba Maluleke said on Friday that information about illegal mining activities was investigated.

Together with public order police, the team pounced on the suspects and caught the 11 people while they were allegedly mining chrome. Mining vehicles, including two TLBs and one horse truck with two trailers worth more than R3 million, were seized.

"While the police were busy detaining the vehicles in Thabazimbi area, a certain man who identified himself as the owner of the TLBs allegedly approached and offered R15 000 gratification to the police so that his seized vehicles could be freed, and he was also arrested."

The 11 people are expected to appear in the Northam Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Maluleke said the owner of the TLBs was arrested for corruption. He will appear in the Thabazimbi Magistrate's Court soon.
