When rope technician Dieudonne Hatungimana arrived for work on Chapman's Peak Drive last Sunday, the last thing he expected was to see a person fly over his head.

Matthew Carter had come barrelling towards him on a bicycle on the world-famous scenic route, hit the side of the road, and was on his way to an almost certain death off the steep cliff.

"I was preparing myself for work when I heard a noise behind me," Hatungimana said. "I just saw this guy flying through the air. At first my mind told me 'catch him'."
