Pietermaritzburg – Two people were killed and a third critically injured in a head-on collision on the R617 in Impendle, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday afternoon, paramedics said.
The collision involved a bakkie and a truck carrying three cows. The driver of the bakkie and a passenger in the truck were killed, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.
The truck driver, a man believed to be in his 60s, had critical injuries including open fractures and partial amputations. The two vehicles were found crushed together and paramedics and fire-fighters struggled for almost three hours to free him.
Once freed, he was treated on the scene and rushed to Greys Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. One of the cows in the truck was flung from the back and found dead several metres away.
Local authorities will investigate the accident.
