East London – Deaths of initiates at circumcision schools must fall, the ANC in the Eastern Cape has said.

This is after eight initiates reportedly died in the first week of the season in the Eastern Cape.

African National Congress provincial secretary Lubabalo Mabuyane said the reported incidents were painful to the party.

“There is no need for any of them to die or be a victim of abuse. We can stop this if we work together as a collective. These deaths and abuse of abakhwetha [initiates] must fall and must stop now.”

He said government were doing all in their power to ensure the passage from boyhood to manhood was a safe, educational and good transition.

“We call on communities, and families of the initiates to play their role in ensuring abakhwetha are safe during their ulwaluko [initiation] process.”

The eight initiates died from botched circumcisions and most of them were from the Chris Hani District Municipality.

Mayubane urged communities to report any wrong doing.

“All stakeholders must make sure that ulwaluko is conducted according to the tradition and anyone in breach of that must be arrested.”
