A death inquest docket has been opened after a teenager's decomposed body was found near a farm in Groot Drakenstein in the Western Cape, police said on Tuesday.
The body was found on Monday night, police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana said.
Drakenstein Farm Watch chairperson Daan van Leeuwen Boomkamp said locals found the remains in Simondium after they "smelt something bad".
"They went to investigate and found the female body in the bushes. She appeared to have died weeks ago," he said.
Van Leeuwen Boomkamp said it was believed that the body was that of a local girl who had gone missing.
However, Rwexana said the person had not been reported missing to police.
A post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
