- A newly promoted Johannesburg Metro Police Department officer helped a woman give birth on the side of the road.
- By the time paramedics arrived, the woman had given birth to a girl.
- The department's Acting Chief of Police Angie Mokasi commended Sergeant Connie Nkuna for going above and beyond the call of duty.
On her first day in a higher-ranking position at the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), Sergeant Connie Nkuna had to go above and beyond the call of duty by delivering a baby on the side of the road.
Nkuna was conducting crime prevention patrols on Wednesday along with her colleagues when they were summoned to help a woman who was in labour on the corner of Milner Avenue and Beyers Naude Drive in Northcliff.
According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, Nkuna quickly sent her colleagues to go in search of paramedics while she stayed behind with the woman.
"The woman went into full labour while she awaited assistance. The baby had to be delivered with the help of Sergeant Nkuna, a bystander, and the mother's sister," Fihla said.

By the time the paramedics arrived, she had given birth to a girl.
Fihla said the woman was taken to Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital in Coronationville.
She and the baby were discharged after observation.
Fihla added:
"Since this was her first encounter with a situation of this nature, she claimed to have been traumatised and to have wondered about whether they were acting appropriately. When the paramedics assured her that both the mother and the infant were fine, she felt relieved."
Nkuna, 41, has been working at the JMPD for 15 years.
"Sergeant Nkuna, newly promoted in the position, was serving her first day in Region B, Randburg, when this incident occurred."
JMPD Acting Chief of Police, Angie Mokasi, commended Nkuna.
