  • Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital has been without water since Saturday.
  • Parts of Tshwane have been experiencing water outages due to issues at Rand Water.
  • Gauteng Health and Wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko did a site inspection of the hospital and organised water tankers.

Tshwane's Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital is the latest victim of the water struggles plaguing Rand Water in Gauteng.

On Sunday afternoon, after cries for water at the facility, Health and Wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko conducted an oversight visit at the hospital.

In a statement, the Gauteng Department of Health said the hospital in Atteridgeville was severely affected by the water outages affecting various parts of Tshwane, including local communities surrounding Kalafong.

Bulk water supplier Rand Water had announced challenges in its system which was impacting supply to the city.

On Sunday evening, the City of Tshwane said there was “still no supply from Rand Water, hence … Atteridgeville HL reservoir remains empty."

According to the health department, the outage led to the hospital's two reservoirs which have the capacity of 748 000 and 480 000 litres running extremely low.

Nkomo-Ralehoko said: "Contingency measures include increasing the number of water tankers bringing water to the facility and the frequency of supply to keep operations going.

"Already about 60 000 litres have been delivered to the facility. There is provision to make water available for the patients across the wards and we will continue to monitor the situation in Tshwane closely."

In a statement, the department said it was in contact with the local authority and water utility to prioritise health facilities for water provision and regular updates on the situation.
