Baphumelele Werwoed Zulu, 20, who stands accused of hacking two Grade 12 pupils to death in Ngwangwane village, southern KwaZulu-Natal, last week has abandoned his bail application.
Provincial NPA spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said Zulu appeared in the Donnybrook Magistrate's Court on Thursday, where he faced two murder charges and one charge relating to his attempt to evade arrest.
SABC news identified the girls as Nqobile Zulu and Minenhle Buthelezi.
News24 reported that police arrested Zulu following the murders last month but he apparently escaped after police booked him out to point out where he had allegedly dumped one of the teenagers.
Zulu allegedly stormed into the pupils' rented accommodation in Ngwangwane village, in the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma municipality.
He allegedly attacked them with an axe and dismembered their bodies. He is accused of leaving one of the bodies in the house and dumping the other in Riverside, five kilometres from their rented cottage.
