Durban – A KwaZulu-Natal man who almost knocked down a pedestrian was shot and killed after a high-speed chase, local police said on Saturday.
Provincial spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said members of the Verulam unit were patrolling the Watson Highway in Verulam when they noticed a vehicle narrowly miss a pedestrian.
Mbhele said the driver refused to pull over for police, speeding up instead. A high-speed chase ensued.
She said backup was called and other members tried to fire shots into the tyres of the vehicle.
Eventually, she said, the vehicle came to a standstill and the driver was found dead in the car with a bullet wound.
A murder case was opened at the Verulam police station and that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate was investigating the matter, Mbhele said.
