Durban - Nineteen people are expected to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court on Tuesday in connection with violence during a protest against election results, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
They face charges of attempted murder, malicious damage to property, and public violence, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said.
They allegedly took part in a protest in Amaoti, Inanda, near Durban on Monday. They were apparently unhappy that ANC candidates had won in three of their wards in the August 3 local government elections.
They blocked the M25 near Bhambayi Road and allegedly attacked police officers who tried to disperse them. A metro police officer was shot in the mouth and right arm. He was in a stable condition in a Durban hospital.
A bus was also set alight.
