A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 76-year-old woman in Morokweng near Vryburg in North West in April 2017.
Reabaka Alphius Baikepi was sentenced in the Ganyesa Regional Court on Tuesday.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani, Baikepi was arrested on 5 January 2019.
The woman – a grandmother – was sleeping alone at her home on 3 April 2017 when Baikepi broke a window to gain entry. He covered her mouth with his hands to prevent her from screaming for help and raped her. Afterwards, he locked the victim's bedroom door, took the key and fled the scene.
Baikepi was arrested at his home in Morokweng after DNA results linked him to the incident. He has been in custody since his arrest.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena welcomed the sentence.
