Limpopo police launched a manhunt for a group of men who stoned a 43-year-old man to death and set his body alight near Tzaneen on Sunday.
The attackers damaged the victim's house and motor vehicles and torched a house belonging to someone else, said police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.
The incident took place at around 11:00 in Bismarck village.
Mojapelo said the motive for the incident was still unknown but domestic violence could not be ruled out.
"The deceased was allegedly at home when a group of about six men arrived and started to assault him and [damaged] his house, furniture and two vehicles. Thereafter they took him to the nearby bushes and jointly, with other community members, stoned and set him alight. He died on the scene," Mojapelo said.
The deceased has been identified as Ngoako Thomas Pilusa.
The crowd reportedly moved to the house of another person, torching the home when they could not find him, Mojapelo said.
"Cases of murder, arson and malicious damage to property were opened for investigation," he said.
