Johannesburg - A 20-year-old man drowned at a residential complex in Springs, in Gauteng on Thursday.

Netcare 911 said the scene suggested the man was part of a group of friends who were swimming in the residential pool when he experienced difficulty in the water and drowned.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said paramedics arrived on the scene to find a Community Police Forum member performing CPR. Paramedics assessed the man and found no signs of life. He was declared dead on the scene.

They issued several tips on keeping swimmers safe. These included:

- Be vigilant and keep a watchful eye on children around water, keep pool gates locked or cover your pool with a certified pool net;

- A basic course in first aid and CPR can make a dramatic difference in the outcome should the skills be applied in time;

- In any emergency situation the most important thing to do is immediately contact the correct emergency number for the relevant authority. Try and memorise the number for emergency services in your area and keep the number saved on your cell phone or close to your landline telephone. In many cases, during the panic of a medical emergency, people cannot remember the correct number or cannot find it.
